The 2019 recitals season continues on Tuesday 16th July at 8.00 p.m. in the Parish Church with an organ, piano and soprano recital by our own Director of Music, David Shippey and his wife, Carol. David and Carol Shippey lived in Sunderland in the North East of England until relocating to Norfolk in 1998. David studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London under George Rogers, Dr Douglas Hopkins and Dr Malcolm Hill, later going on to London University. After teaching for a year in Wisbech, he returned to Sunderland and taught in the music department of Monkwearmouth School, later becoming Head of Music at St Aidan’s School where he remained for 15 years. As well as teaching music at school, he was Organist and Choirmaster of Bishopwearmouth Parish Church and afterwards at St George’s United Reform Church. He also taught piano privately. From 1985-1993, David was Musical Director of the Bishopwearmouth Choral Society, conducting choral music from Bach and Vivaldi through to 20th Century works. Since moving to Norfolk, David has taught at Cromer High School, Wymondham College, Blyth Jex School and Hellesdon High School in Norwich and is Director of Music at Cromer Parish Church. He continues to teach piano and organ privately.

Carol was born in Sunderland, is the daughter of a musical family and has sung all her life. She had some formal training in her teens but is mostly self-taught. She has sung chorally and as a soloist. In her early years, Carol was a well-known local performer with BBC North, on both Radio and TV, accompanying herself on the guitar. Over the years, Carol has composed a number of works including vocal and instrumental pieces and has written a considerable collection of poetry and short stories.
